We tried on lots of oversized ski goggle and aviator-style sunnies and picked our favorites.
Good morning, everyone! For this week’s installment of our advice column, we’re addressing a certain sunglasses shape we’ve been internally debating since Phoebe Philo first debuted her now famous ski goggle-style Bombé shades. At the time, we all thought they were fabulous but worried we’d look positively unhinged walking around town in them. A few seasons later, the idea has been interpreted by lots of different brands in varying degrees of extremity and we’ve warmed to the idea of 50% percent of our faces being covered by eyewear (how wonderful, really!). We tried on a bunch of different versions all over the city and narrowed it down to the styles below, which we feel have the right balance of chic, humor and coverage….making them ideal for early-morning school drop-offs, Euro ski vacations, looking famous and anytime you feel like going incognito. If you want to see some of these on real faces for scale, we’ll be posting some outtakes of our Adventures in Giant Sunglasses on Instagram today as well.
With love and shade,
Alexa, Courtney & Aaron
Alexa picked these Phoebe Philo Bombés because they’re the OG, have very thick luxe arms and are like being inside Darth Vader’s helmet.
Courtney felt like Audrey in Megève in these Tom Fords, which are extra glamorous and have rose-colored lenses.
Aaron was into the drama of these Jacques Marie Mage Barclay Sunglasses that made her feel like she was in costume in a very good way.
Alexa is very excited about Vehla’s Dixie shades, which give you a Dazed and Confused look and have light tinted lenses for all-weather wear.
Aaron was drawn to the subtlety of these Khaite x Oliver Peoples 1977 Oversized Aviators and their boxy fit.
Courtney picked these old school BluBlocker Original Polarized Aviators for their classic Stowe-in-the-80s vibe and hot orange lenses.
We all enjoy Goodr’s Amelia Earhart Aviators not only for their price and because they’re super light weight, but for the fact that you can play tennis in them…and look pretty cool while doing it.
Aaron was very into the tinted shades in these Illesteva Memphis Aviators, which make everything look happy and bright.
Alexa liked the slightly smaller scale of these Vallon Surf Aviators, which are very Jimi Hendrix.
Aaron picked these Ray-Ban Drifters for their flat top, light weight and Princess-Di-on-ski-vacation energy.
Courtney loves these men’s Loewe Curvy Pilot Sunglasses because they’re ridiculous and fun and make everyone smile.
Alexa picked Quay’s Set List style in burgundy because they’re a very affordable way to test out the idea without committing to Phoebe prices.

During our adventures around NYC testing out sunnies, we popped into the Hèrmes store on Madison Avenue and put one of these sleep masks on! Made from goatskin and printed silk twill scraps, the mask is part of the Petit h collection, a line of bespoke upcycled items created from leftover materials from the house’s different métiers. Everything is on display at the store—which has been totally transformed by the conceptual artist Lucia Hierro—until October 26th, so if you’re in Manhattan go check it out!
